Overview:

A Bay Area, CA based contract research organization specializing in medical device pre-clinical testing, seeks experienced Clinical Veterinarian to provide clinical management of surgical subjects. As the clinical leader in the Operating Room environment, the Clinical Veterinarian plans, checks and directs the work of surgical technicians and animal care staff. Additionally, the role will work directly with the client’s research team on protocol development and is responsible for meeting all protocol requirements.

Position will be based in one Bay Area lab site, but must support the needs of both Bay Area sites. Rotating weekend on call and active AALAS involvement.

Job Functions:

• Must be on site for all surgical procedures, which requires strict adherence to a tight surgical schedule.

• Pre and post operative care of surgical subjects.

• Perform cut downs for vascular access.

• Circulate through ORs providing veterinary support to clients and technical oversight; write and review SOPs for OR operations.

• Supervise Senior Surgical Technicians’ duties and responsibilities.

• Oversee surgical equipment maintenance and calibration program.

• Perform surgical exposure per protocol, including sternotomy and thoracotomy.

• Clinical case management of multiple species including but not limited to bovine, ovine, caprine, canine, feline, porcine, rodents and lapine.

• Support colony health programs by performing quarantine release exams, baseline and intra operative blood work, diagnosis and treatment of disease states, analysis of laboratory results.

• Provide veterinary consultation to clients for optimum case management and project outcomes.

• Support pathology services by performing necropsies and explants per protocol.

• Act as Study Director for protocols; report writing for client studies as needed.

• Review protocols for IACUC submission.

• Oversee and provide on-going training to subordinate technical staff and new hires.

Required Skills:

• Ability to work independently, exercise good clinical judgment, provide supervisory support of technical staff and use diplomacy and tact in dealing with internal and external customers.

• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted.

HAZARDOUS ASSESSMENT:

• Ergonomics: Repetitive motion.

• Potential Biohazards: Exposure to human cadaver tissue, blood and other bodily fluids.

• Potential Chemical Hazards: Exposure to typical laboratory disinfectant agents such as glutaraldehyde and preservative such as formaldehyde.

Education and Experience:

• Graduate of an accredited school of veterinary medicine and licensed to practice in the State of California.

• Experience working in a busy surgical environment in a senior level and/or supervisory position required.

• Board certification in cardiology, radiology, anesthesia, surgery, or ten years of private practice experience preferred.
