The Humane Society of Williamson County, located in Leander, TX seeks a F/T Vet Tech to provide medical assessment, health checks, administer medications and provide daily care for sick animals at the shelter. This person will assist in the execution of onsite spay/neuter and vaccination clinics. In addition, the chosen candidate will provide medical examinations and vaccinations to shelter animals in the foster care program and also and maintain the vaccination schedule for shelter animals and complete other medical documentation, as necessary. Veterinary Tech
Broad Function: To provide medical assessment, health checks, administer medications and provide daily care for sick animals at the shelter. Assist in the execution of onsite spay/neuter and vaccination clinics. Provide medical examinations and vaccinations to shelter animals in the foster care program. Maintains Petpoint vaccination updates for shelter animals and other medical documentation. To ensure all sick animals are in clean conditions, and maintain such items as litter boxes, food bowls, kennels, clean. To ensure clinic is clean at all times. Will perform other duties as assigned/needed. Reports to Medical Supervisor.
Specific Duties:
Daily check of each animal under medical care for signs of illness improvement, medicate those who need it. Clean kennels, litter boxes and food bowls.
Assess medical conditions and take appropriate action.
Provide daily medication to treatment animals in the shelter ensuring at all times that proper forms are filled out per animal and signed off. No medication is to be administered to any animal without proper logging onto a medical form, including explanation for medication.
Creates and maintains medical sheet for each animal receiving medication and signs off on these sheets after administering medications.
Ensures that after their surgery, all dogs are returned to their proper kennel in the barn and that cats are housed in a proper location in the cattery. Proper location is to be determined by either barn staff or cattery staff. Barn staff is to be informed at this time if any dog needs further medication.
Administer health checks to all new animals in shelter (with help of kennel staff or medical supervisor). Health checks consist of: Heartworm tests, FeLV/FIV tests, vaccinations, dewormer, heartworm and flea/tick medication as needed.
Track vaccinations and provide follow-up vaccinations as needed.
Enter all medical information into animals Petpoint record or inform proper staff when needed.
Makes veterinarian appointments and transports animals to veterinarian as needed, with approval of Medical Supervisor, Executive Director, Kennel Manager or Office Manager.
Assist in the preparation, execution and clean up of spay/neuter clinic and vaccination clinic.
Provide care, feeding and cleaning for all animals housed in clinic and ISO rooms.
Cleaning and disinfecting of Clinic daily and after Surgery and Vaccine Clinics, and of ISO rooms, and of medical office/steam room, especially if animals are housed there
Assist with cleaning of Cat Adoption Room or Barn if needed.
Communicate with kennel staff the special needs of individual animals. Follow up as appropriate to ensure special care is administered.
Reports deaths of shelter animals to Medical Supervisor.
Provide medical care of all animals in foster when needed, be it medication or vaccinations.
Other duties as assigned
Note: Medical duties include but are not limited to; administering medication, illness/injury/grooming assessment, weight management, and vaccinations.
Authority: The Vet Tech position reports to the Medical Supervisor.
Qualifications: Minimum requirements are a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Previous vet tech experience required. Candidate must have knowledge of basic safe animal handling techniques, performing animal health assessments, ability to effectively administer medications and vaccinations and some surgical technician experience.

Other: Valid drivers license required. Willingness to attend training programs to upgrade skill level. Weekend work required.
