KENNEL ATTENDANT

PURPOSE

Assist the Director of Operations with the daily operational duties of the shelter with primary responsibility for the direct care of all shelter animals including cleaning protocols, health, laundry and general maintenance.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED

Kennel Attendant assists with daily animal care and general shelter maintenance and housekeeping as directed by the Director of Operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

-Responsible for the care of animals and the cleaning and maintenance of shelter facilities

-Monitors the health of the animals on a daily basis and confers with the Wellness Coordinator about any animals which may need medical treatment

-Communicates inventory needs to the Animal Care and Administrative Assistant

-Transports animals to/from veterinarian offices for treatment

-Other Duties as Assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience/Education

One year progressively responsible experience performing routine duties in an animal shelter/veterinary office.

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

-Knowledge of techniques for properly handling and caring for animals

-Able to prioritize tasks and handle stressful situations

-Must be able to handle a variety of animals in a safe and humane fashion

-Deal effectively and tactfully with the public

-Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and a team spirit with staff and volunteers

Working Conditions

Position requires prolonged, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities as well as exposure to weather conditions including heat and rain

The position also requires grasping and repetitive hand movement

The incumbent is frequently around animals that may be agitated or attempt to bite or scratch

The need to lift and carry animals weighing in excess of 50 pounds also is required

License/Certificate

Possession of a Class C California driver’s license and acceptable driving history required.

Work Schedule

This is an hourly, non-exempt, 40 hour per week position. Applicant must be willing and able to work a changing schedule, including some or all weekends. Salary is $9.00 per hour.
