* Assigns and supervises the work of the zoo personnel in the care, feeding, and maintenance of animals and their enclosures
* Arranges for the maintenance of the facilities and grounds including the scheduling/work assignment involving the zoo maintenance mechanic, planned maintenance programs, and contractual maintenance programs (e.g., garbage/waste removal, debris/dirt removal from walkways and pest control)
* Oversees landscape maintenance
* Makes daily inspections of the zoo to determine animal health,cleanliness, orderliness, and correction of any safety hazards.
* Works with contractors on construction projects
* Recommends and enforces zoo rules and policies for the protection,safety and sanitation of animals
* Maintains high level of performance in animal management;
* Monitoring feeding schedules
* Under direction of the zoo veterinarian, implements special animal programs such as parasite control, hoof trimming, dehorning,grooming, and similar programs
* Will perform zoo attendant work for emergencies or for training purposes.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in the biological
sciences, animal husbandry, or related field.
KNOWLEGE AND ABILITIES:
* considerable knowledge of habits, dietary food and water needs, and other requirements of domestic animals;
* knowledge of modern supervisory principles and practices: ability to effectively supervise a work force caring for animals
* considerable knowledge of plumbing, heating, electrical, structural, carpentry, landscaping, heavy and light equipment and maintenance/operation to maintain zoo grounds, and facilities
* ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing – bilingual a plus.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Available to work nights, weekends and holidays. Possession of a valid California drivers license.
